Mammography
A mammogram is a breast X-ray test. Each breast is X-rayed in frontal and profile view to show the entire mammary gland. In this way, breast cancer can be detected at an early stage, as well as other anomalies, such as opacities or micro-calcifications.
How do I access the services?
This test is specifically for women over 40. A mammogram should be done every 2 to 3 years on the advice of a physician. The booking department will call you to schedule your appointment.
To effectively combat breast cancer, the Quebec ministry of health and social services (Ministère de la Santé et des Services sociaux - MSSS) has implemented the Quebec Breast Cancer Screening Program (PQDCS), which arranges for letters to be sent every 2 years to women aged 50 to 69 to ask them to have a mammogram at a screening centre.
If you are less than 50 years of age or over 70, you will need a prescription from your physician in order to have a mammogram.
What to expect?
- The test takes from 15 to 20 minutes.
- You will have to remove your upper garments and put on a hospital gown.
- A technician will ask you questions about your medical history.
- Each breast will be placed between two plastic plates and compressed so that the image can be taken.
What to bring?
- You’ll need your health insurance card and hospital card.
- If you have the original copy of your test request, be sure to bring it with you.
