Health services (0-5 years old)

Several services are available to monitor the health status and optimal development of children from birth to age five. This brochure details the resources deployed in our communities and includes instructions on how to access them. Here you will find information on the postnatal visit, vaccination, development monitoring by a health professional and resources for non-urgent or semi-urgent health needs.

Health services available in your community – from birth to age five

Nutrition (0-5 years old)

Intended for parents requiring nutritional advice for children 0-5 years of age. For children 0-5 years of age with nutritional problems.

Services offered

Group session:

Facilitated by nutritionists, available using the TEAMS platform. Open to all parents in the Outaouais region.

Infant feeding workshop: Two-hour session, in the morning Topics covered:

  • First session (prerequisite for second session): Introduction of complementary foods, progression of textures, eating behaviour, homemade purees
  • Second session (optional): baby self-feeding/baby-led weaning (BLW)

Feeding toddlers (1-5 years old): Offered as a lunch-and-learn from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Topics covered: 0-5 years old section.

  • The nutritional needs of young children, eating behaviours, common problems and possible solutions

One-on-one session

One-on-one consultations with a nutritionist are provided following a referral from a physician, health professional or at the request of a parent through Info Social (811, option 2).

The service is provided based on a needs assessment and resource availability.

Speech therapy

Speech therapy services are provided to:

  • Eligible children under five years of age with language, speech or communication impairments
  • School-aged children (5 to 17 years old) with needs related to:
    • Stuttering
    • Cleft palate
    • Voice or resonance disorder
    • Lateral lisp

How to access services?

Speech therapy services are provided following a medical referral, a referral from a health or social services professional, a community partner or a direct request from the parent, depending on eligibility criteria:

  • The request must be received no later than March 1 of the year prior to entering kindergarten at age five.
  • The user must live in the area covered by the CISSS de l’Outaouais.
  • There must be no diagnosis (absence of a physical disability (PD), intellectual disability (ID), autism spectrum disorder (ASD) or certain genetic syndromes).

What can I expect?

Services will be provided at the CLSC in your area based on a needs assessment and resource availability.

Depending on the need, a follow-up of between eight and 12 sessions (unidisciplinary need) or a total of 20 sessions (multidisciplinary needs) will be offered.

  • For the unidisciplinary pathway, the service will be provided by a speech therapist.
  • For the multidisciplinary pathway, the child will be seen by a multidisciplinary team that may include the disciplines of occupational therapy, speech therapy and psychoeducation.

Occupational therapy (0-5 years old)

Occupational therapy services are intended for children aged 0 to 5 years with delays/difficulties in activities of daily living, gross and/or fine motor skills, perceptual skills or sensory integration difficulties.

How do I access the service?

Occupational therapy services are provided following a medical referral, a referral from a health or social services professional, a community partner or a direct request from the parent, depending on eligibility criteria.

  • The request must be received no later than March 1 of the year prior to entering kindergarten at age five.
  • The user must live within the area covered by the CISSS de l’Outaouais.
  • There must be no diagnosis (absence of a physical disability (PD), intellectual disability (ID), autism spectrum disorder (ASD) or certain genetic syndromes).

What can I expect?

The service is provided at the CLSC in your area based on a needs assessment and resource availability. Depending on the need, a follow-up of between six and eight sessions (unidisciplinary need) or a total of 20 sessions (multidisciplinary needs) will be offered. Depending on the direction:

  • For the unidisciplinary pathway, the service will be provided by an occupational therapist.
  • For the multidisciplinary pathway, the child will be seen by a multidisciplinary team that may include the disciplines of occupational therapy, speech therapy and psychoeducation.

Vaccination (0-3 years old)

Vaccinations for toddlers aged 0-3 are intended to protect them as soon as possible. Vaccines are scheduled on a specific schedule at the age of two months, four months, 12 months and 18 months. These vaccines are recommended by medicals experts on Quebec’s immunization committee (CIQ) and the established schedule was developed to provide the best possible protection for your child. Refer to the Ministère’s proposed immunization schedule, which includes the vaccines offered free of charge under the Québec Immunization Program. It is important to get your child vaccinated at the recommended age and avoid delays so that they are protected at the best time.

How do I access the service?

The vaccination service for children aged 0 to 3 is offered by nurses at all Local Community Service Centres (CLSCs) and in some Family Medicine Groups (GMFs) and medical clinics.

What can I expect?

The session includes an assessment of the child’s health by a nurse to ensure it is safe to administer the vaccine, the administration of the vaccine, followed by an observation/waiting period. Don’t forget to bring your child’s vaccination record with you for your appointment. This record is usually given at birth or at the first vaccination appointment.

ABCdaire

ABCdaire 18 month+ during the 18-month vaccine

One of the strategies developed under the program is the development monitoring activity during 18-month vaccine.

During this appointment, in addition to vaccinating your child, caregivers at your Local Community Service Centre (CLSC) can fill out the ABCdaire 18 month+. To complete this development monitoring tool, you are asked questions about your child’s overall development. Following this appointment, if there are any issues, you are referred, with your consent, to Agir tôt screening or another appropriate service.

School vaccination

Your child may be vaccinated at a school vaccination clinic at a CLSC or during a vaccination period at his/her school (grade 4 and secondary 3).

Where and when are the services provided?

Vaccination:

Vaccination for children aged 4-6 is offered in the various CLSCs in the region throughout the year.

Clinical nurses travel to schools to provide vaccinations for grade 4 students as well as for secondary 3 students.
